“Furrow after furrow after furrow, his house lay away where he now lay sleeping and she hated him.”

Preface Theatre shakes up the stage this October with the World Premiere adaptation of Governor General Award winning writer James Reaney's controversial short story The Box Social.

James Reaney's haunting The Box Social is an early example of a Southern Ontario Gothic. It is the story of a young woman, who embarks on a journey to confront the biggest crisis of her life. In this adaptation Sylvia (Sarena Parma) is accompanied by her Erinyes (Lisa Karen Cox, Nicole St. Martin, Kelly Hope Taylor). These Furies seek justice and a balance to the natural order.

We glimpse into Sylvia’s past in which her encounters with He (Joel Sturrock) become increasingly illicit, and into her present as she is propelled by her Erinyes towards the box social...

“New Liberty Magazine published the story. Hundreds of readers all across Canada wrote in denouncing me.” James Reaney

This magic-realism adaptation involves the interaction between actors and classical animation, all creating Sylvia's story, her environment and the people in it. The wonderland of shapes and light that is the set carries us through Sylvia's journey through time and space to her moment of crisis.
